Museum to Return Three Sacred Niho Palaoa

The Dayton Society of Natural History intends to return three sacred Hawaiian whale-tooth pendants (two lei niho palaoa and one niho palaoa) that were donated in 1949 (Accession 53-49). The items have a cultural affiliation with Hui Iwi Kuamo[revaps]o and are determined to be ceremonial objects needed by traditional Native Hawaiian religious leaders. Repatriation may occur on or after May 18, 2026.

Anyone Eligible May Request Repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not identified in the notice may submit a written request for repatriation by showing, by a preponderance of the evidence, that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated group. Repatriation may occur on or after May 18, 2026.
