FMCSA Launches Survey on Truck Driver Schedules to Reduce Crash Risks

Published Date: 4/20/2026

Notice

Summary

The FMCSA is starting a new survey to learn how truck drivers’ work schedules affect crash risks and driver tiredness. About 60 motor carriers will spend a little time sharing info, helping improve safety on the roads. Comments are open until May 20, 2026, so everyone can join the conversation!

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Recruitment Bias May Underestimate Fatigue Risk

FMCSA notes recruitment may overrepresent larger, well-resourced companies because the study relies on telematics and voluntary participation; FMCSA expects this bias could lead to underestimating the true risk of fatigue in the industry.

Time Burden on Participating Motor Carriers

If your company participates as a motor carrier, FMCSA estimates 60 respondents will provide data. Each response takes about 15 minutes (0.25 hours); the collection includes one-time tasks (IC1, IC2) and quarterly exports (IC3), and the agency estimates a total annual burden of 45 hours across respondents.

Deidentified Public Data Release

FMCSA’s contractor will create a publicly available deidentified dataset of the collected HOS, crash, and demographic data; all personally identifiable information will be removed and the dataset will be provided to FMCSA after relevant State and Federal statutes of limitations have expired.
