Waiver of adverse-action protections

For employees serving an extended probationary or trial period at the listed STRLs, certain adverse action procedures under 5 U.S.C. chapter 75 and related provisions of 5 CFR (including parts of part 11 and part 752) are waived to the extent necessary so that adverse action procedures apply only to those not serving a probationary or trial period. This waiver is effective no earlier than April 21, 2026, as described in the STRL Federal Register notices and appendices.

Extended probation periods for STRL staff

Starting no earlier than April 21, 2026, certain Department of Defense Science and Technology Reinvention Laboratories (24 listed STRLs) may use extended probationary or trial periods that can be greater than one year. Employees hired prior to June 24, 2025, and employees hired after the effective date of this notice are subject to the extended probationary or trial periods authorized in applicable STRL Federal Register notices and implementing regulations.
