FAA Proposes Brake Checks for Bombardier Jets After Incident

Published Date: 4/23/2026

Proposed Rule

Summary

The FAA wants Bombardier BD-700-1A10 and BD-700-1A11 airplane owners to check if their brake control units (BCUs) are safe after a tire burst incident. If the BCUs are faulty, they must be replaced, and no more bad parts can be installed. Comments on this safety fix are open until June 8, 2026, and while it might cost some money, it’s all about keeping flights safe and smooth.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 4 costs, 0 mixed.

Mandatory BCU Inspection and Replacement

If you operate a Bombardier BD-700-1A10 or BD-700-1A11 airplane, the FAA proposes you must inspect to see if brake control unit (BCU) part number GW415-7125-7 is installed and replace affected BCUs with P/N GW415-7125-9. The rule also prohibits installing the affected BCU P/N GW415-7125-7 and follows Transport Canada AD CF-2022-53 to address an unsafe condition related to uncommanded brake pressure.

Potential High Cost for On-Condition Replacement

If an inspection finds a BCU that must be replaced, the FAA estimates an on-condition action could cost up to $430,259 per airplane (including up to $430,089 in parts plus $170 labor). The FAA states it cannot predict how many aircraft will need this on-condition replacement, and the manufacturer may cover some or all costs under warranty.

Prohibition on Installing Affected BCUs

The proposed AD prohibits installing the affected brake control unit identified as P/N GW415-7125-7 (Crane P/N 42-965-3) and requires installation of BCU P/N GW415-7125-9 (Crane P/N 42-965-4) where applicable. This restriction applies as part of complying with Transport Canada AD CF-2022-53 incorporated by reference.

Estimated Inspection Cost Per Airplane

The FAA estimates the required inspection will take 2 work-hours at $85/hour, costing $170 per airplane. The FAA estimates this proposed AD would affect 42 U.S.-registered airplanes, for a total estimated inspection cost to U.S. operators of $7,140.
