Helicopter Owners: Check That Tiny Tail Rotor Washer Now

Published Date: 4/23/2026

Proposed Rule

Summary

If you own or fly a Bell Textron Canada Model 505 helicopter, listen up! The FAA wants you to check a tiny washer on the tail rotor pitch link to make sure it’s installed right. This quick inspection could save you from bigger problems later, and you need to act before June 8, 2026. No big costs expected, just a simple safety check to keep your chopper flying safe and sound.

One-time safety inspection for Model 505

If you own or operate a Bell Textron Canada Model 505 helicopter identified in Transport Canada AD CF-2025-34, you must do a one-time visual inspection of the tail rotor pitch link washer and, if needed, reassemble or replace parts. The FAA estimates this AD affects 10 U.S.-registered helicopters; the inspection is 1 work-hour ($85) per helicopter (total $850 for U.S. operators), and required replacements could cost up to $9,472 per helicopter. Compliance follows the procedures in Transport Canada AD CF-2025-34 as incorporated by reference.

No special flight permits allowed

The proposed AD forbids special flight permits under 14 CFR 21.197 and 21.199 for the affected Model 505 helicopters, meaning operators cannot obtain special permission to fly the helicopter for ferrying to maintenance under that provision. This restriction is part of the proposed rule as published in the NPRM.
