FAA Bans Flights Over Trump Tower: Security or Absurdity?

Published Date: 4/30/2026

Proposed Rule

Summary

The FAA wants to create a no-fly zone called Prohibited Area P-75 around President Trump's New York residence to keep the area safe and secure. This change affects pilots and anyone flying near Trump Tower, who will now have to avoid this new restricted airspace. Comments on this proposal are open until June 15, 2026, and no new costs are expected for the public.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

New 1 NM No‑Fly Zone at Trump Tower

If you operate an aircraft near Trump Tower in New York, a proposed Prohibited Area P-75 would bar flight from the surface up to 1,000 feet above ground level in a 1 nautical mile radius around the tower unless the United States Secret Service grants permission. The proposal is open for comment until June 15, 2026 and would make the restriction continuously in effect if finalized.

Temporary SSI Made Permanent and Charted

FAA proposes to convert the existing Special Security Instruction (SSI) flight restriction (in effect until October 20, 2026) into a permanent prohibited area (P-75) that would be charted and continuously in effect. This change makes the restriction permanent and publicly charted rather than a temporary SSI.

East River Helicopter Corridor Preserved

FAA designed P-75 with a flat edge that parallels the East River so helicopter operations along the East River can continue. This carve-out helps helicopter operators (including air ambulance and commercial helicopter services) keep using established routes.
