Nevada Gas Line Grows: Public Input on Eco Effects by May 27

Published Date: 4/30/2026

Notice

Summary

Great Basin Gas Transmission Company plans to expand its gas pipeline in six Nevada counties by 2028, building new facilities and retiring old ones. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is asking the public to share their thoughts on how this might affect the environment by May 27, 2026. This input will help decide if the project moves forward and how to reduce any environmental harm.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.

Landowners Face Easement and Eminent Domain Risk

If you are a landowner in the project area, Great Basin may contact you to negotiate an easement to build, operate, and maintain the pipeline. If the Commission approves the project and you do not reach an agreement, the company could initiate condemnation (eminent domain) proceedings in court, and compensation would be determined by a judge under state law.

Construction Will Disturb Thousands of Acres

Construction for the 2028 Expansion Project would preliminarily disturb about 4,500 acres of land and leave about 1,500 acres permanently maintained for operation. Most disturbed acreage would be restored and return to former uses after construction.

Project Could Affect Water, Wildlife, Historic Sites

FERC will evaluate potential environmental effects on geology, water resources and wetlands, vegetation and wildlife, threatened and endangered species, cultural and historic resources, air quality, noise, and safety. The notice specifically flags impacts from public land crossings, the California National Historic Trail, waterbody crossings including the Humboldt River, and the planned abandonment of older pipeline segments.

Public Can Comment; Deadline May 27, 2026

FERC is asking the public to submit scoping comments on the planned project by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on May 27, 2026, and is holding four public scoping sessions in Nevada on May 18–21, 2026. You can submit comments by eComment, eFiling, mail, or by speaking one-on-one at a scoping session (oral comments will be transcribed).
