Who may request repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request for repatriation of the cultural item by showing, by a preponderance of the evidence, that they are the appropriate requestor. Requests (including joint requests) must be sent to the California Department of Parks and Recreation NAGPRA Coordinator and repatriation to an approved requestor may occur on or after June 11, 2026; if competing requests are received, the Department will determine the most appropriate requestor.
