Repatriation Available to Kaw and Osage Nations

The Kansas State Historical Society will return human remains and two associated funerary objects found in Buchanan County, Missouri to affiliated groups starting on or after June 18, 2026. The Kaw Nation, Oklahoma and The Osage Nation are identified as affiliated; written repatriation requests may be sent to Dr. Nicole Klarmann at Kansas State Historical Society, 6425 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66615-1099 or emailed to [email protected].

Who May Request Repatriation

Repatriation requests may be submitted by the Kaw Nation and The Osage Nation identified in the notice, any lineal descendant, or any Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian organization that shows by a preponderance of the evidence that it has cultural affiliation. If competing requests are received, the Kansas State Historical Society will determine the most appropriate requestor; joint requests count as a single request.
