Mine Agency Extends Hoist Safety Paperwork Again

Published Date: 6/1/2026

Notice

Summary

The Mine Safety and Health Administration wants to keep collecting records about tests and checks on hoisting equipment used to lift miners safely. This proposal asks for public feedback by July 31, 2026, to make sure the paperwork is clear and not too much work. If you work with mining equipment, this affects you, but no new costs or big changes are planned—just a smooth extension of current rules.

Continuation of Hoist Records Collection

MSHA is proposing to extend, without change, the existing information collection (OMB Control No. 1219-0034) for records of tests and examinations of personnel hoisting equipment and is seeking comments by July 31, 2026. MSHA reports 393 annual respondents, 105,563 annual responses, an annual time burden of 8,916 hours, and annual recordkeeping costs of $348,920. The extension maintains current paperwork and recordkeeping requirements rather than creating new ones.

Specific Inspection and Record Rules Continue

The collection covers required inspections and records for all mines (30 CFR parts 56, 57, 75, and 77), including initial wire rope measurements, biweekly visual rope examinations, semiannual nondestructive tests or measurements, daily examinations of personnel hoists, and tests of safety catches at least once every two months. Certification and records requirements continue: measurement records retained until the rope is retired from service and examination certifications/records retained for one year.
