Government Finally Retires 2006-Era Window Rules

Published Date: 6/3/2026

Rule

Summary

The government is officially removing an old rule about car window materials made before 2006 because it’s no longer needed. This change affects manufacturers and anyone dealing with older vehicle glazing equipment but won’t cost anyone extra or cause big changes. The update kicks in on July 6, 2026, making things simpler and clearer for everyone.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Obsolete glazing rule removed

The agency removed FMVSS No. 205(a), which covered glazing equipment manufactured before September 1, 2006, and glazing materials used in vehicles manufactured before November 1, 2006. The removal (including deletion of incorporated standards ANSI Z26.1-1977, ANSI Z26.1a-1980, and SAE J673a) takes effect on July 6, 2026.

Aftermarket glazing must meet standard

The revised FMVSS No. 205 (S5.1.2) says aftermarket replacement glazing is required to meet the requirements of the standard. If you buy or install replacement car glazing, it must comply with FMVSS No. 205.

No significant small-entity costs certified

NHTSA certified under the Regulatory Flexibility Act that this final rule will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities because it only deletes obsolete regulatory text. The agency therefore did not prepare a regulatory flexibility analysis.
