TSA Tweaks PreCheck Application Paperwork Again

Published Date: 6/3/2026

Notice

Summary

TSA is updating how they collect info for the TSA PreCheck® application to make the process smoother for travelers. If you apply for TSA PreCheck® or are part of Trusted Traveler programs, you’ll share some personal and biometric details through TSA’s online systems. Comments on these changes are open until July 6, 2026, and there’s no new fee—just a smarter way to apply!

Analyzed Economic Effects

10 provisions identified: 6 benefits, 3 costs, 1 mixed.

Estimated respondent and cost burden numbers

TSA estimates 6,303,987 annual respondents, 4,339,658 annual burden hours, and an annual cost burden of $468,127,340 associated with the TSA PreCheck Application Program information collection.

FBI/DHS systems may retain and vet your fingerprints

TSA sends applicants' fingerprints to the FBI's NGI system (which may retain them) and to DHS IDENT/HART, and fingerprints retained in NGI may be subject to the FBI Rap Back continuous monitoring and recurrent vetting until the applicant's STA expires.

Approved applicants get Known Traveler Number

TSA issues an approved applicant a Known Traveler Number (KTN) that can be used when booking travel to become eligible for expedited screening on flights from U.S. airports and select international locations (including Nassau, Bahamas); most applicants should expect notification within 3 to 60 days of a completed application.

You must provide biometrics to apply

If you apply to TSA PreCheck or a Trusted Traveler program, you must submit biographic data and biometrics (fingerprints and/or facial imagery) directly to TSA through its online systems to enroll and complete identity verification.

No new fee is being introduced

TSA states there is no new fee proposed in this revision to the TSA PreCheck application collection; public comments on the revision are due by July 6, 2026.

MyTSA PreCheck ID: optional mobile biometric ID

TSA is adding an optional MyTSA PreCheck ID mobile identity that eligible DHS Trusted Traveler members may use; it requires providing a facial image (selfie) to confirm identity, the selfie is deleted after identity verification, and users may provide a departure airport code within 24 hours of their flight to use the ID.

TSA Customer Service Portal requires login.gov

TSA PreCheck members who wish to view or update membership information in the TSA Customer Service Portal must have a login.gov account (email and password); the portal lets members see their KTN, enrollment provider, renewal date, and opt-in/opt-out selections for incentives like Touchless ID.

Seamless Identity Automation expands touchless option

TSA is developing a Seamless Identity Automation solution to expand 1:n touchless identity verification at checkpoints; PreCheck passengers may voluntarily opt-in and securely share elements of a digital ID and boarding pass data from their mobile wallet.

Less frequent post-enrollment surveys reduce burden

TSA will send the optional post-enrollment survey to only a statistically significant number of new enrollees and renewals instead of sending it to every applicant, reducing survey burden on most applicants.

Correction window and decision timing for applicants

Applicants typically receive TSA notification between 3 and 60 days after submitting a completed application; if initially deemed ineligible, applicants have 60 days from the ineligibility letter to submit corrections before TSA may make a final denial.
