Mandatory DHC-8 Barrel‑Nut Inspections
Starting July 9, 2026, the FAA requires repetitive inspections for cracking and corrosion of barrel nuts on all De Havilland DHC-8 airplanes and any required corrective actions. The FAA estimates the AD affects 91 U.S.-registered airplanes and estimates the cost per affected airplane is up to $1,105 (13 work-hours x $85/hour), for a U.S. operator total cost of up to $100,555.
Safety: Preventing Failed Barrel Nuts
The AD responds to reports of cracked barrel nuts caused by corrosion from inadequate cadmium plating and requires inspections to prevent failed barrel nuts that could compromise structural joints. The FAA says if not addressed, failed barrel nuts could compromise structural integrity and could lead to loss of control of the airplane.
Specific Inspection Timing Rules
The AD sets specific compliance times: some inspections must be done as of 60 days after July 9, 2026 at the next flight-compartment windshield replacement; other inspections must be done within 6 years since entry into service or within 60 days after July 9, 2026 (whichever is later) and repeated at intervals not to exceed 6 years; certain part-number inspections repeat at intervals not to exceed 7 years. All required corrective actions must be done before further flight.
