College Grants for Language Centers

Colleges and universities (institutions of higher education) can apply for grants of up to $1,400,000 for a single project period of 48 months to create or improve centers that teach modern foreign languages and international/area studies. Eligible applicants are an institution of higher education or a consortium of such institutions, and applications must be submitted through Grants.gov by 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern time on July 7, 2026.

More Language & Area Studies for Students

If you are a college student, this program funds centers that will teach modern foreign languages (for example: Arabic, Mandarin, Swahili, Hindi, Korean, Japanese, and others) and provide instruction and research on world regions such as Latin America, Europe, Eurasia, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. That can increase course offerings, training, and research opportunities in international studies at participating institutions.

AI and 'Returning Education' Competitive Preference

The FY 2026 competition includes two competitive preference priorities: Returning Education to the States and Artificial Intelligence. Applicants that propose projects aligned with these priorities may receive selection preference in the grant competition.
