Notice

Summary

The Department of Education is asking to keep collecting info for the Teacher Cancellation Low Income Directory, which helps identify schools where teachers can get loan forgiveness. This affects state, local, and tribal governments who provide the data, with about 6,840 hours spent yearly on this task. Comments on this plan are open until July 15, 2026, and no changes or extra costs are planned.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness Eligibility Tool

If you are a federal student loan borrower who taught full-time in an elementary or secondary school serving more than 30 percent low-income students, the Directory provides web access that helps postsecondary institutions determine whether you may qualify for up to 100 percent cancellation or loan forgiveness for Perkins, Direct Loan, or Federal Family Education Loans, or whether you are meeting a TEACH Grant service obligation. The Directory uses the Title I, Part A definition of more than 30 percent low-income enrollment.

State/Local/Tribal Data Burden

State, local, and tribal governments must provide data for the Teacher Cancellation Low Income Directory and are estimated to spend 6,840 hours per year on this work across 57 annual responses. The Department has submitted this collection for OMB review and is accepting comments through July 15, 2026.

Optional School Type Data Element Added

The Department is updating the collection to include an optional school type data element for the Teacher Cancellation Low Income Directory. The new data element is optional and is part of the reinstatement submission to OMB (Control Number 1845-0077).
