Hatch licenses renewed — plant stays online

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued renewed operating licenses for Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2 on June 11, 2026, authorizing operation at reactor core power levels not in excess of 2,804 megawatts thermal. This lets the plant continue providing electricity without interruption and helps local communities and businesses stay energized for now.

NRC finds no significant environmental impact

The NRC's Environmental Assessment for the Hatch subsequent license renewal, published March 31, 2026, concluded environmental impacts would be SMALL and issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). Because of that FONSI (notice published April 2, 2026), the NRC decided not to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the license renewal.

NRC confirms safety and legal compliance

The NRC staff determined Southern's subsequent license renewal application meets the standards of the Atomic Energy Act and NRC regulations and issued a Safety Evaluation dated May 20, 2026. That safety evaluation supported issuing the renewed licenses for continued operation under required safety rules.
