Notice
Summary
The NIH wants to keep collecting info using the Chimpanzee Research Use Form and is asking the public to share thoughts by July 23, 2026. This form helps track how chimpanzees are used in research, affecting scientists and animal welfare groups. No big changes or costs are expected, just a smooth extension of the current form’s approval.
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.
Funding Limited to Noninvasive Chimpanzee Research
The NIH will not fund research involving chimpanzees in new or competing projects unless the proposed work meets the definition of "noninvasive research" in the Standards of Care (42 CFR part 9). Proposals that do not meet that definition will not receive NIH funding.
Mandatory Chimpanzee Form for Funding
If you propose noninvasive research involving chimpanzees and want NIH support or approval, you must complete the Chimpanzee Research Use Form. The NIH will review the form before making funding decisions or allowing the research to begin.
Estimated Time Burden for Respondents
NIH estimates no monetary costs to respondents other than time: 30 respondents will each spend about 30 minutes per response, for a total estimated annualized burden of 15 hours. OMB approval is being requested for three years and the current control expires 7/31/2026.
