Change to Where Mine CO Sensors Go

If you work at the Beckley Pocahontas Mine in Raleigh County, West Virginia, the mine operator has asked to use five strategically placed atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) units instead of placing sensors within 50 feet of each electrical installation. The petition covers about 18 electrical installations in the Bottom Area and along the Nos. 1 and 2 belts and relies on ventilation modeling and CO transport times (airflow ~108,297 cubic feet per minute; velocities ~505 feet per minute).

Fewer Nuisance CO Alarms in Diesel Areas

The petition says placing sensors within 50 feet of each electrical installation in areas with heavy diesel equipment has caused nuisance CO alarms that are not related to fires. The proposed five-unit AMS layout is intended to reduce those nuisance alarms while keeping immediate alarm transmission and the same fire response procedures.
