Truck Makers Get Extra Years for Seat Belt Rules

Published Date: 6/26/2026

Proposed Rule

Summary

NHTSA is giving truck makers more time to meet new seat belt anchorage rules by pushing the deadline from 2027 to 2030 for heavy vehicles over 10,000 pounds. Lighter vehicles still need to comply by 2027, and smaller vehicle makers have until 2028. This change helps manufacturers get ready without rushing, keeping everyone safer on the road.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Seat‑belt anchorage strength stays specified

FMVSS No. 210 continues to require that seat belt anchorages withstand 22,241 N (about 5,000 lb) for Type 1 assemblies and the lap/shoulder loads of 13,345 N (about 3,000 lb) applied simultaneously for certain Type 2 or automatic assemblies. These force requirements apply according to the compliance dates (vehicles ≤ 4,536 kg by Sept 1, 2027; vehicles > 4,536 kg by Sept 1, 2030).

Heavy‑vehicle makers get a 3‑year delay

If you make heavy vehicles (GVWR greater than 4,536 kg / 10,000 pounds), NHTSA is proposing to move the compliance deadline from September 1, 2027 to September 1, 2030. The proposal also allows manufacturers to choose to comply early before that date.

Light‑vehicle and alterer deadlines remain earlier

Manufacturers of vehicles with GVWR less than or equal to 4,536 kg (10,000 pounds) must still meet the September 1, 2027 compliance date. Multi‑stage manufacturers and alterers of vehicles ≤ 4,536 kg must comply by September 1, 2028.

Delay reduces near‑term burden on small entities

NHTSA says the proposed extension for heavy vehicles reduces the burden on small entities and would let manufacturers defer recertification costs. The agency certifies the rule would not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities.
