Notice

Summary

NHTSA wants to keep collecting info on motor vehicle tires and rims but with some updates. More vehicles and rims mean a slight cost increase and more work for manufacturers and recordkeepers. If you’re involved in making or tracking tires and rims, your input is needed by August 25, 2026!

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Higher Recordkeeping Costs for Manufacturers

If you make tires, retread tires, or rims, the agency estimates higher recordkeeping costs and more work. NHTSA reports the total annual cost estimate rose by $37,000 to $1,007,620 because vehicle estimates increased from 19,000,000 to 20,000,000 and rims from 95,000,000 to 100,000,000; annual burden hours for new tire manufacturers, retreaders, and rim manufacturers rose to 278,913 hours from 274,491 hours.

Tire and Rim Labeling Improves Safety

NHTSA requires labeling on tires, retread molds, rims, and vehicle placards so tires are mounted on the right rims and vehicles. The rule says labels must include vehicle loads, axle loads, and recommended tire inflation pressure, and that labeling helps prevent mismatched tires and rims which can cause tire or rim failure and loss of vehicle control.
