Return of 15 Sacred Hawaiian Items

If you are affiliated with the Hui Iwi Kuamo'o or are a lineal descendant, the Los Rios Community College District intends to return 15 sacred Native Hawaiian cultural items — including poi bowls, kapa (bark cloth), kapa beaters, adzes, ulumaika (disc stones), and an octopus lure sinker — starting on or after August 3, 2026. LRCCD determined these objects are specific ceremonial items needed by traditional Native Hawaiian religious leaders and established a cultural affiliation with the Hui Iwi Kuamo'o.

Who Can Request Repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request for repatriation to Jamey Nye at Los Rios Community College District and must show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated organization. LRCCD will accept requests and may repatriate the items on or after August 3, 2026; if competing requests are received, LRCCD must determine the most appropriate requestor and treats joint requests as a single request.
