Repatriation Allowed Beginning August 3, 2026

If you are a member of the Quapaw Nation or a recognized lineal descendant, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has determined the human remains are culturally affiliated with the Quapaw Nation and those remains may be returned to the tribe on or after August 3, 2026. The determination covers at least one individual collected in 1964 from a site in Poinsett County, Arkansas.

Who May Request Repatriation and How

If you want the remains, send a written repatriation request to Claire Auerbach at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (207 East Cameron Avenue Suite 108, Chapel Hill, NC 27514) or via the provided email. Requests may be submitted by any of the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations identified in this notice, or by a lineal descendant or tribe/organization not listed that shows cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence; the University must resolve any competing requests before repatriation.
