FAA Fixes Loose 787 Door Handles

Published Date: 7/2/2026

Rule

Summary

The FAA is making sure certain Boeing 787 airplanes stay safe by fixing door handles that have been coming loose during pre-flight checks. Starting August 6, 2026, airlines must install new parts and do inspections to keep these doors secure. This update helps prevent safety issues without causing big delays or costs.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Mandated fixes and inspections for Boeing 787 doors

Starting August 6, 2026, operators of certain Boeing Model 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 airplanes must install a new retainer above the lower keyway of the doorway support bracket, install a placard or mark the part, and for some airplanes perform inspections of the forward and aft door assist handles and required on-condition actions. The required actions are specified in Boeing Requirements/Service Bulletins (Issue 001 and Issue 002) that are incorporated by reference in the AD.

FAA cost estimates for U.S. operators

The FAA estimates the AD affects 116 U.S.-registered airplanes. Estimated per-airplane costs: inspection for Model 787-8/787-9 is $1,020; installation of retainers and placards up to $1,476; inspection and reidentification for Model 787-10 is $2,540. Aggregate U.S. operator cost examples in the AD include $110,160 for inspections (108 airplanes), up to $159,408 for installations (108 airplanes), and $20,320 for 8 Model 787-10 airplanes.

Small-entity impact and FAA certification

The FAA identified three domestic entities affected by the AD and determined one is a small business (NAICS 523910) with annual revenue $1,920,000. The FAA estimates the high-case cost share for that small entity is $2,786, which equals 0.15% of annual revenue, and certifies the AD will not result in a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities.

Material alternatives and credit for prior work

The FAA allows use of alternative adhesives and materials: BMS5-105 Type II or Type VI may be used instead of BMS5-105 Type 5, and Uralane 5774-1 A/C may be used instead of Uralane 5774 A/C. The AD also gives credit if required actions were done before the effective date using Boeing Requirements Bulletin Issue 001 and the later bulletin provides the option to mark the part instead of installing a placard.
