Return of Eight Tribal Cultural Items

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection intends to repatriate eight unassociated funerary objects (six pieces of lithic debitage, one bag of debitage, and one long stone) originating from sites CA-SAC-112 and CA-SAC-113 in Sacramento County. The items have a cultural affiliation with the Ione Band of Miwok Indians of California and the Wilton Rancheria, and repatriation may occur on or after August 7, 2026.

Who Can Request Repatriation and How

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not named in the notice may send a written request for repatriation to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection if they show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. Repatriation may occur on or after August 7, 2026; if competing requests arrive, the Department must decide the most appropriate requestor, and joint requests are treated as a single request.
