The Navy and the Autry Museum determined that human remains representing 12 individuals and 33 lots of associated funerary objects from San Clemente Island are culturally affiliated with specific tribes: La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians; Pala Band of Mission Indians; Pauma Band of Luiseno Mission Indians of the Pauma & Yuima Reservation; Pechanga Band of Indians; Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians; Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Mission Indians; and the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians.

Repatriation Eligible Starting Aug 7, 2026

Repatriation of the human remains and associated funerary objects may occur on or after August 7, 2026. Written repatriation requests may be submitted by any one or more of the named tribes, or by a lineal descendant or other tribe/Native Hawaiian organization that shows by a preponderance of the evidence cultural affiliation; competing requests will be resolved by the Navy and the Autry Museum and joint requests count as a single request.
