Project aims to restore bridge to 'Good' condition
MaineDOT aims to improve Machias Dike Bridge #2246 to a condition rating of 7 or better on the 0–9 scale (a rating of 7 = Good). The bridge is over 92 years old, currently rated 4, and temporary structures were installed in 2024 and replaced in April 2026 to maintain traffic while a permanent solution is designed.
Property, trail, and community impacts will be evaluated
The EIS will evaluate potential property impacts, effects on the Downeast Sunrise Trail, community uses of the Route 1 causeway, and municipal landfill impacts. These issues will be considered during scoping and in the Draft and Final EIS documents.
Environmental resources will be studied
The EIS will examine wetlands and Waters of the United States, historic resources, Section 4(f) resources, endangered species, essential fish habitat, fish passage, and tidal exchange as potential impacts of the bridge alternatives. The Draft EIS is expected in Spring 2027 and the combined Final EIS and Record of Decision in Fall 2027.
