States’ Annual Source Water Reporting

The EPA will continue annual, voluntary data collection from 51 state respondents about source water protection for community water systems. The reporting is voluntary, the current information collection approval runs through September 30, 2026, and the public comment deadline is September 8, 2026; EPA estimates total respondent burden at 102 hours per year and average respondent cost at $6,608 per year.

Public Access to Source Water Data

Source water protection data that states submit to the Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) will be publicly available on EPA’s website and, together with data in the Drinking Water Mapping Application to Protect Source Waters (DWMAPS), can be used by communities for analysis and outreach. EPA says this public availability helps communities include source water considerations in their planning and outreach.
