OSHA Extends Fire Extinguisher Paperwork Deadline

Published Date: 7/10/2026

Notice

Summary

OSHA is extending the approval to keep collecting paperwork for testing portable fire extinguishers to make sure they work safely. This affects businesses that maintain fire extinguishers, with no new costs or big changes—just keeping things running smoothly. You’ve got until September 8, 2026, to share your thoughts on this paperwork extension.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Keep Hydrostatic Test Records

You (as an employer or business that maintains portable fire extinguishers) must develop and maintain a certification record of hydrostatic testing that includes the date of inspection, the signature of the person who performed the test, and the fire extinguisher's serial number or other identifier. That certification record must be made available to the Assistant Secretary (or the Assistant Secretary's representative) upon request.

Estimated Burden and Cost Reductions

OSHA is requesting OMB extend approval and reports an adjustment decrease in total burden hours from 504,377 to 141,265 (a reduction of 363,112 hours) and an annual capital cost decrease from $210,664,596 to $77,634,450 (a reduction of $133,030,146). OSHA attributes the decreases to a reduction in total floorspace and therefore fewer portable fire extinguishers requiring hydrostatic testing.
