NAICS 2027 Will Reclassify Industries

The Office of Management and Budget is proposing revisions to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) that will clarify industry definitions, add new industries, and combine some existing industries. These changes will be used by OMB-recognized statistical agencies and other data users for establishment data referring to periods beginning on or after January 1, 2027, and may change how businesses are counted and categorized in official statistics.

Many Industries Recombined or Renamed

The ECPC recommends many specific content changes that combine, split, or rename industries (for example, rice milling and malt manufacturing combined into NAICS 311214; computer and peripheral equipment consolidated under NAICS 334110; and media streaming and social networks separated into new NAICS 516213 and 516214). These tabled changes will alter the NAICS 2022 -> NAICS 2027 crosswalks used for statistical series.

EV Motors Moved to Vehicle Parts Code

The ECPC recommends moving electric motors for electric vehicles from NAICS 335312 (Motor and Generator Manufacturing) into NAICS 336310 (Motor Vehicle Engine and Engine Parts Manufacturing). The NAICS titles 33631 and 336310 would be changed to "Motor Vehicle Engine and Engine Parts Manufacturing" to reflect that reclassification.

Airport Titles Now Include Spaceports

The ECPC recommends changing NAICS 48811 "Airport Operations" to "Airport and Spaceport Operations" and NAICS 488119 to "Other Airport and Spaceport Operations," and adding wording to clarify where to classify commercial spaceports. This change explicitly directs classification of commercial spaceport activity within airport-related industries.

Small Arms & Ordnance Code Reintroduced

NAICS 2027 reintroduces a national industry code 332995 for "Small Arms, Ammunition, Ordnance, and Ordnance Accessories Manufacturing," restoring an industry code that existed in the original 1997 NAICS and was discontinued in 2012. This provides a distinct 2027 classification for those manufacturing activities.
