Published Date: 7/16/2026

Notice

Summary

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to update its survey about Alaska big game guides to better understand how they're used. If you’re involved with big game guiding in Alaska, this affects you! They’re asking for your feedback by September 14, 2026, and this update won’t cost you anything but a few minutes to share your thoughts.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Outfitter and Guide Names Removed

The survey will no longer ask respondents to provide the outfitter name(s) or the name(s) of the person(s) who guided the trip; those two questions (Question 3 and Question 4 on Form 3-2538) will be removed. This change affects clients of commercial guide services who would have been asked to name outfitters or guides during the survey.

Demographics Section Removed

The survey will remove the entire Section 5 labeled 'A little about you,' which included questions on gender; State and/or country of residence; year of birth; race or ethnicity; formal schooling; and approximate household income. This change means those demographic items will no longer be collected from respondents for this Alaska guide survey.

Survey Time Burden and Scope

The Service estimates 300 annual respondents will complete the Alaska Big Game Guide Use Survey one time after their guided trip, with each response taking about 20 minutes and a total annual burden of 100 hours. Responding is voluntary.

Optional Explanation Field and Contact Added

The revised form adds an optional open field at the end of Section 3 for respondents to explain their responses and adds a point-of-contact in the new Section 6 for questions or concerns. These additions apply to clients of permitted commercial guide services completing Form 3-2538.
