EPA Rejects Challenge to Mitsubishi Chemical Air Permit

Published Date: 7/16/2026

Notice

Summary

The EPA said no to a request from several environmental groups to block Mitsubishi Chemical’s air permit for its Geismar, Louisiana plant. This means Mitsubishi can keep operating under the current rules, but the groups have until September 14, 2026, to take the issue to court if they want. No new costs or changes for the company right now, but the legal clock is ticking!

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Permit stays in effect for Mitsubishi

On June 9, 2026, the EPA denied a petition to object to Title V operating permit no. 0180-00233-V0 for Mitsubishi Chemical America, Inc.'s MCA Geismar Site in Geismar, Ascension Parish, Louisiana. Because of that order, Mitsubishi may continue operating under the current permit and faces no new permit changes or costs right now.

Judicial-review deadline set

The petitioners named in the September 9, 2024 petition (RISE St. James, Healthy Gulf, Louisiana Bucket Brigade, Sierra Club, and Earthjustice) may seek judicial review of the portions of the EPA order that denied issues. Any petition for review must be filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals no later than September 14, 2026.
