Two Baskets Identified for Repatriation
If you are a member of the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians of California or a lineal descendant, the Museum of Ventura County intends to return two baskets it identifies as objects of cultural patrimony. The baskets were owned by Adelina Gonsman, donated by her son George Gonsman in 1981, and repatriation may occur on or after September 2, 2026.
Who May Request Repatriation
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request to repatriate the two baskets if they show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. The Museum of Ventura County will resolve any competing requests and may complete repatriation on or after September 2, 2026.
