Foreign Vessel Could Hurt U.S. Builders
MARAD received a request to allow the foreign-built vessel S/V PROVIDENCE to operate in U.S. coastwise trade carrying no more than 12 passengers for hire. MARAD is asking for comments by September 4, 2026 to decide whether allowing this use would have an undue adverse effect on U.S. vessel builders or coastwise trade businesses that employ U.S.-built vessels.
Owner Seeks Coastwise Endorsement Approval
The owner of S/V PROVIDENCE has requested an eligibility determination so the foreign-built vessel could receive a U.S. coastwise trade endorsement to carry up to 12 passengers for hire. If MARAD determines the use would not unduly harm U.S. builders or coastwise businesses, the vessel could be authorized to operate in coastwise trade; comments are due September 4, 2026 (Docket MARAD-2026-1192).
