Summary

In accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Cumberland Island National Seashore has completed an inventory of human remains and has determined that there is a cultural affiliation between the human remains and Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations in this notice.

Cultural Affiliation Identified

An inventory found human remains representing at least three Native American individuals and determined they are culturally affiliated with the following tribes: Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas; Alabama-Quassarte Tribal Town; Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana; Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma; Kialegee Tribal Town; Miccosukee Tribe of Indians; Poarch Band of Creek Indians; Seminole Tribe of Florida; The Muscogee (Creek) Nation; The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma; and Thlopthlocco Tribal Town. The remains were identified on March 19, 2025 and no associated funerary objects are present.

Who Can Request Repatriation and When

The notice allows requests for repatriation to be submitted by any one or more of the tribes named in the notice or by any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not named that shows by a preponderance of the evidence a cultural affiliation. Requests must be sent to Melissa Trenchik, Superintendent, Cumberland Island National Seashore, 101 Wheeler Street, St. Marys, GA 31558, email [email protected], and repatriation may occur on or after September 14, 2026; the Cumberland Island National Seashore will decide among competing requests and treats joint requests as a single request.
