Summary
In accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Petersburg National Battlefield intends to carry out the disposition of associated funerary objects removed from Federal or Tribal lands to the lineal descendants, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization with priority for disposition in this notice.

Lineal descendants, Indian Tribes, or Native Hawaiian organizations may submit written claims to request the two associated funerary objects. Claims must be sent to Andrea DeKoter, Superintendent, Petersburg National Battlefield (1539 Hickory Hill Road, Petersburg, VA 23803 or email [email protected]) and may be submitted by identified parties or others who show they have priority.
Named priority claimants identified
The notice names Don Coyhis and JoAnn Schedler as the lineal descendants with priority for the associated funerary object for John B. Coyhis/Chays. The lineal descendants for Jaco Panswonquot/Pe-to-zo-on-oquette also have priority, with their names withheld but available on request.
Unclaimed objects become unclaimed after deadline
If no claim for disposition is received by August 13, 2027, the two associated funerary objects described in this notice will become unclaimed associated funerary objects. Disposition may occur on or after September 14, 2026.
