AmeriCorps Wants Your Volunteering Stats—Again

Published Date: 8/25/2026

Notice

Summary

The Corporation for National and Community Service, operating as AmeriCorps, has submitted an information collection request (ICR) for the Current Population Survey Civic Engagement and Volunteering Supplement.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.

Survey Response Burden for Households

AmeriCorps will collect responses from individuals and households for the Current Population Survey Civic Engagement and Volunteering Supplement, with a total estimated 60,000 annual responses and 6,670 total annual burden hours. If selected, you may be asked to spend an average amount of time answering the supplement questions as part of this national survey.

Reduced Detail on Formal Volunteering

The supplement will include fewer questions about formal volunteering compared with the 2017 version because Census policy (2022) prevents adding questions that increase supplement length; AmeriCorps may reinstate two formal volunteering questions (Q16b and Q16c) in future rounds only if Census policy or resources change. Researchers and stakeholders who use detailed formal volunteering data will have less granularity in this CEV round.

Clearing Rephrased Questions for Web Testing

AmeriCorps is seeking OMB clearance of rephrased supplement questions to allow expedited testing if the Census implements an internet self-response mode for the CEV before this OMB control number expires. This revision aims to permit testing of web-based response options for the supplement alongside Census modernization efforts.
