Upward Bound Math Nerds: Same Old Annual Report, No Twists

Published Date: 8/28/2026

Notice

Summary

The Department of Education wants to keep collecting yearly reports from Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math Science programs without changing the current process. This affects schools and organizations running these programs, who will keep submitting their performance data as usual. Comments on this plan are open until September 28, 2026, with no new costs or changes expected.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Program Services Continue for Eligible Students

The Upward Bound (UB) and UB Math Science (UBMS) programs continue to offer required services for eligible participants who are potential first-generation college students, low-income individuals, or students at high risk of academic failure. Required services include academic tutoring, college entrance exam preparation, help with college admission and financial aid applications, information on Federal Pell grants, loan forgiveness, scholarships, GED/secondary reentry assistance, and financial literacy education.

Two-Year Grants Must Provide Advanced Coursework

Projects funded for at least two years under UB/UBMS must provide instruction in mathematics through pre-calculus, laboratory science, foreign language, composition, and literature. This requirement applies to projects that receive two-year funding under the program.

Annual UB/UBMS Reporting Continues

If you run an Upward Bound (UB) or Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) project, you must continue to file the same annual performance report under OMB Control Number 1840-0831. The Department estimates 1,244 total annual responses and 21,148 total annual burden hours, and it is proposing an extension without change; comments are due by September 28, 2026.
