In accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District, has completed an inventory of human remains and associated funerary objects and has determined that there is a cultural affiliation between the human remains and associated funerary objects and Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations in this notice.

Determined Cultural Affiliation
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District, has determined that human remains and associated funerary objects from three sites in Bath County, Virginia (sites 44BA3, 44BA5, and 44BA15) are culturally affiliated with the Monacan Indian Nation. The inventory identifies at least 10 Native American individuals and 357 lots of associated funerary objects recovered during investigations between 1978 and 1982.
Repatriation Eligible Starting Sept 30, 2026
The human remains (representing at least 10 individuals) and 357 lots of funerary objects may be repatriated on or after September 30, 2026. Repatriation requests may be made by the Monacan Indian Nation, other Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations identified in the notice, or by lineal descendants or tribes/organizations that demonstrate cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence.
