VA Formally Names Bosses for Veteran Side Gigs

Published Date: 10/6/2026

Notice

Summary

The VA is asking for public feedback on a new form to officially name supervisors for their Work Study program, where veterans earn money by working part-time while in school. This helps make sure supervisors are properly designated to support veterans. Comments are open until December 7, 2026, and the change aims to improve how the program runs without adding extra costs.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Faster payments for VA Work Study students

If you are a Veteran or other VA beneficiary enrolled at least 3/4 time (75% Rate of Pursuit) in school and participating in the VA Work Study program, the new VA Form 22-10219a is intended to let work sites update designated supervisors faster. Faster processing of supervisor designations is meant to reduce payment delays that can cause financial hardship for students.

Only designated supervisors can certify students

Approved VA Work Study sites (such as colleges, VA Regional Offices, and VA cemeteries) must designate a Primary and at least one Secondary Work Site Supervisor. The designated supervisors are the only individuals authorized to provide or receive information about approved VA Work Study students and to submit VA Work Study forms on a student's behalf.

Time burden to submit supervisor updates

Work sites that submit these supervisor designations are estimated to be 515 respondents who will each spend about 10 minutes per response, for an estimated total annual burden of 86 hours. The form is submitted 'as needed' when supervisor changes occur.
