FAA Redraws Arizona Skies, Mostly to Keep Aircraft Orderly

Published Date: 10/30/2026

Rule

Summary

The FAA is updating the airspace rules around Chandler and Phoenix, AZ, by changing Class D airspace and creating new Class E airspace to keep flights safe and smooth. These changes also update the Mesa Gateway Airport’s name and location info to match FAA records. The new rules kick in on February 18, 2027, with no extra costs for pilots or airports.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 4 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Chandler Class D airspace enlarged and raised

The Chandler Municipal Airport Class D airspace radius increases from 4.0 miles to 4.8 miles and its vertical limit is raised from 3,000 feet MSL to up to but excluding 4,000 feet MSL, effective February 18, 2027. Aircraft transiting the same area will still be able to fly there but must contact the Chandler FAA Contract Tower for clearance.

Mesa Gateway Class D and Class E expansions

Mesa Gateway Airport Class D airspace radius increases from 5.0 miles to 5.4 miles (surface to and including 3,900 feet MSL) and the rule establishes Class E airspace at Mesa Gateway extending upward from 700 feet within a 7.9-mile radius and additional specified corridors out to 12.6–17.7 miles, effective February 18, 2027. The rule also adds a 1.2-mile radius exclusion around Pegasus Airpark and excludes portions within Chandler Class D and Phoenix Class B airspace.

Class E airspace established at Stellar Airpark

Class E airspace extending upward from 700 feet above the surface is established for Stellar Airpark, Chandler, AZ, covering a 13.9-mile radius of the airport, effective February 18, 2027. This designation is intended to accommodate arriving and departing IFR operations at Stellar Airpark.

FAA says rule will not impose significant costs

The FAA states the amendment is routine, is not a 'significant regulatory action,' and is expected to result in at most de minimis costs from compliance or minor rerouting; the rule is certified to not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities. The final rule is effective February 18, 2027.
