Sponsored By: Representative Rutherford
Introduced
Summary
This bill would increase criminal penalties for thefts of firearms from Federal firearms licensees. It would raise the maximum prison term for knowingly violating the federal rule on stolen firearms to 20 years, add mandatory minimum sentences of 3 years when the theft happens during a burglary of a licensed gun business and 5 years when it happens during a robbery, and extend coverage to attempts to commit the offense while defining burglary to cover unlawful entry or remaining in the business premises of licensed importers, manufacturers, or dealers.

Tougher penalties for gun store thefts
If enacted, this bill would raise penalties for stealing or trying to steal guns from licensed dealers, manufacturers, or importers. A person who knowingly does this, or attempts it, could face up to 20 years in prison, fines, or both. If the crime happens during a burglary of the business, the prison term would be at least 3 years. If it happens during a robbery, the term would be at least 5 years. The bill defines burglary as entering or staying in the business to commit a crime, and it would also make clear that attempts are covered in related rules. These changes would take effect upon enactment.
