Show full summary
- Medicare beneficiaries with eating disorders: Would gain covered outpatient medical nutrition therapy with minimum service amounts of 13 hours in the first year and 4 hours in each subsequent year.
- Registered dietitians and nutrition professionals: Must provide the covered services for the care to qualify under Medicare.
- Physicians, psychologists, and other mental health professionals: Could refer patients for medical nutrition therapy to the extent allowed by state law.
- Program definition and limits: The Secretary would use the most recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to define eligible eating disorders and could set reasonable limits and specify eligible providers and referral sources.

Medicare nutrition help for eating disorders
If enacted, Medicare Part B would cover medical nutrition therapy for eating disorders starting January 1, 2026. You would need a referral from a doctor or a psychologist (or another authorized mental health provider). Care would need to be given by a registered dietitian or nutrition professional. Coverage would include at least 13 hours in the first year—1 hour for an initial visit and 12 hours of follow-up. In later years, at least 4 hours each year could be covered, and the Secretary could set reasonable limits; eating disorders would be defined using the latest DSM.
