HR3180119th Congress

Taiwan Representative Office Act

Sponsored By: Representative Bacon, Don [R-NE-2]

Introduced

Summary

Gives Taiwan de facto diplomatic treatment and renames its U.S. office as the Taiwan Representative Office. The bill would direct the Secretary of State to seek negotiations to rename the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the District of Columbia and provide that any U.S. law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record referring to the old name is treated as referencing the new name for all official purposes. It clarifies the change does not restore formal diplomatic relations, does not alter the United States' position on Taiwan's international status, and creates no new funding or programs.

New Taiwan office name and policy

The Secretary of State would seek talks to rename the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Washington, DC. The new name would be the "Taiwan Representative Office." If renamed, all U.S. laws, maps, and records would use the new name, including in court. The bill would also say the U.S. should treat people from Taiwan like people from other countries in practice, consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act and the 1982 Six Assurances. It would not restore diplomatic relations or change the U.S. view of Taiwan’s international status.
