Grants to add sprinklers in public housing
If enacted, HUD would run a competitive grant program for public housing agencies. The grants would pay to install automatic sprinkler systems in "exempted public housing projects." Agencies could not use these grant amounts to install sprinklers in rebuilt multifamily properties. The Capital Fund would be authorized $25 million per year for fiscal years 2025 through 2034, in addition to other Capital Fund money.
Sprinkler program definitions and reports
If enacted, the bill would define key terms for the sprinkler retrofit program, including "automatic sprinkler system," "Capital Fund," and "exempted public housing project." The Secretary would report on the presence or absence of sprinklers found in HUD inspections. Not later than 3 years after enactment, HUD would submit to Congress a report based on inspections during that 3-year period. The bill would not require a public housing agency to install sprinklers in exempted projects.
