Satellite-Based Agricultural Data Act
Sponsored By: Representative Pettersen, Brittany [D-CO-7]
Introduced
Summary
Integrates commercial weather services into federal agricultural research priorities. This bill would amend the Agricultural and Food Research Initiative priority language in 7 U.S.C. 3157(b)(2)(E)(iii) by adding a phrase that explicitly includes data and tools available from commercial weather services as part of mitigation measures. The change signals that AFRI-funded mitigation projects should consider and integrate commercial weather data and tools when designing or evaluating proposals. The act is titled the Satellite-Based Agricultural Data Act and ties the new language to the existing AFRI statute.

Farm research grants could use commercial weather data
This bill would make clear that USDA's Agricultural and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) grants can use data and tools from commercial weather services as mitigation measures. This could help projects that use these tools line up with grant priorities. It would mostly affect researchers, universities, and farm groups applying for these grants. It would not add money or change who can apply. If enacted, it would take effect upon enactment.
