Sponsored By: Representative Thompson (MS)
Passed House
Summary
Transfers two small parcels of Vicksburg National Military Park to Mississippi to improve public access. This bill would authorize the conveyance by quitclaim deed, without consideration, of two federal parcels inside the park of about 1.7 acres and 5.7 acres to the State of Mississippi and would direct the Secretary of the Interior to modify the park boundary to exclude the conveyed land. The lands must be used to facilitate public access and enhance the visitor experience consistent with the park’s interpretive mission and may carry use restrictions the Secretary determines appropriate.

Mississippi would get small park parcels
If enacted, the Interior Secretary would give Mississippi two small pieces of land inside Vicksburg National Military Park. The parcels are about 1.69 acres and 5.74 acres, shown on maps dated September 2024. The State would get them by quitclaim deed and pay nothing. The land would have to improve public access and the visitor experience, follow the Park’s interpretive mission, and meet any use limits the Secretary sets. When conveyed, the Park boundary would be changed to remove these parcels.
