Introduced

Summary

Independent, time-limited National Academies review before EPA proposes fluoride drinking water limits. This bill would require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to seek an agreement with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to carry out a rapid response evidence review and to publish that review with any proposed fluoride rule.

Show full summary
  • Families and communities: Get more transparency. The full National Academies rapid review would be published in the Federal Register as part of any proposed fluoride standard so the public can see the independent evidence behind the proposal.
  • EPA and rulemakers: Must pursue an external review and formally consider its findings before publishing a proposed maximum contaminant level or goal for fluoride. The agency may use funds already available to meet this requirement.
  • National Academies: Would receive all data and other information used to justify the proposed rule and conduct a rapid response evidence review on a 90 to 180 day timeline.
