Wildfire satellite grants for state officials
The Interior Department, through USGS, would set up a competitive grant program within one year. At least three grants would go to State foresters, emergency managers, or similar officials who apply. The bill authorizes $20 million each year for FY2026–FY2028. Grants could only fund public‑private partnerships to buy and integrate latest‑generation satellite imaging and analysis (visible, near‑infrared, shortwave infrared, thermal, and radar). States would use the data to detect and manage fires, check prescribed fire safety, and guide post‑fire recovery. The Secretary would report to Congress by the end of the second fiscal year after enactment.
