HR5993119th Congress

MACV–SOG Congressional Gold Medal Act

Sponsored By: Representative Alford, Mark [R-MO-4]

Introduced

Summary

Congressional Gold Medal for MACV‑SOG. This bill would authorize a single Congressional Gold Medal to honor members of the Military Assistance Command Vietnam‑Studies and Observations Group for bravery and outstanding service in South Vietnam, North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia during the Vietnam War. It would direct the Treasury to strike the gold medal and place it with the Smithsonian for display and research, allow the U.S. Mint to sell bronze duplicates to cover costs, and use the Mint Public Enterprise Fund for payments and proceeds. The bill’s findings note MACV‑SOG’s 1964 origin, its high‑risk operations, about 1,579 killed or missing from 1964–1972 with more than 50 still missing, 12 Medal of Honor recipients, and a 2001 Presidential Unit Citation.
