More battlefield grants through 2036

If enacted, the bill would let the Secretary of the Interior award grants for battlefield preservation. It would authorize $2,000,000 to be appropriated each fiscal year to fund grants under the interpretation modernization and restoration programs through fiscal year 2036. It would change numeric program references from 50 to 75 in two grant rules, remove one subsection, and replace another to add the funding authority. It would also extend the Battlefield Acquisition Grant Program authorization from 2028 to 2036. States, Tribal governments, local governments, and preservation groups would be able to apply for these grants.

Studies of French and Mexican War sites

If enacted, the bill would direct the Secretary of the Interior, through the National Park Service, to study U.S. sites tied to the French and Indian War (1754–1763) and the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). The studies would identify sites in the United States, rate their relative significance, assess short- and long-term threats, and suggest preservation and interpretation options, including possible National Park System designation where appropriate. The Secretary would consider prior reports, consult Governors, affected Indian Tribes, local governments, the American Battlefield Trust, preservation organizations, and other interested parties. The Secretary would report results to the appropriate congressional committees no later than 2 years after funds are made available to carry out the studies.
